New housing units built increased in 2021 back to numbers seen in the early 2000s, largely due to new apartment units. A total of 16,716 units were built from 2012 to 2021, significantly less than the 26,263 new housing units built from 2002-2011.

The number of new multi-family units increased significantly in 2021 from 2020, after growth in the previous year and a strong decline of multi-family new unit construction in 2018. Multi-family new units increased to the highest number of units in the past 10 years, over three times the number of units built in 2020.

New apartment unit construction drove West Whiteland, West Goshen, and Downingtown to have the highest number of new units constructed in 2021.
West Goshen (80 units), East Pikeland (71 units), and West Brandywine (71 units) had the highest number of new single-family detached units.
West Whiteland (129 units), and East Whiteland (77 units) added the most new single-family attached units.
