Chester County Agricultural Economic Strategic Plan
Chester County, one of the leading agricultural regions in the state, is at a crossroads. Farming, a cornerstone in the local economy, is facing challenges exacerbated by the pandemic including increasing labor shortages, lack of access to farmland for new and beginning farmers, increased development pressure and environmental fluctuations. At the same time, the industry is well positioned to take advantage of an increased interest in local food production and agritourism, as well as a proximity to cutting-edge research institutions and population centers. This plan was created in partnership with ag stakeholders from across the region to facilitate a successful transition to the future by supporting our local communities and letting agriculture entrepreneurs do what they do best: innovate.
Vision
Our vision for Chester County agriculture is for the industry to continue to be a leading economic sector now and in the future. We want to ensure that agriculture is recognized as a significant part of Chester County's economy, heritage, culture and landscape, as well as for the potential economic growth it can bring our region, despite continuing growth pressure and other challenges facing the industry locally, nationally and internationally.
This ag economic development strategic plan is intended to mitigate issues that limit industry growth, harness opportunities that grow the agricultural economy, increase employment opportunities at all skill levels, and maximize county, local and regional resources to support industry growth.
Private and public partnerships are essential for the successful implementation of the plan. Farms, businesses, industry associations, non-governmental organizations, local government and research institutions all have significant roles to play to ensure that agriculture not only survives but thrives here in Chester County.
